UMSTEAD YAHOO EMAIL GROUP

We have a family email mailing list to which we would encourage ALL UM descendants with email to subscribe. This is where we post queries and day-to-day communications among family members and researchers. As a subscriber, you will also have access to the list archives. If you're not on this list, you are missing out.

NOTE: This list was formerly with eGroups, and before that with Onelist, so you may see it referred to as the Onelist or the e-Group.

Subscription to the Umstead Yahoo Group is subject to approval, for the protection of our members, your own of course included. This is not to imply that we think you or anyone else has wrong intentions, please understand that, but because we are sharing personal information, it has become necessary for us to know who our members are. As an example, we have had people subscribe solely for purposes of solicitation.

Subscription by interested parties who are not UM descendants will be at the discretion of the moderator.

The Procedure:

1. FIRST, please send an email to the MODERATOR (Cris) at [email protected] with your name, MAILING ADDRESS, email address and, as best you can, a brief outline of your UM ancestry. If you are not an UM descendant, please explain your interest. We may opt to just post a one-time message on your behalf if we feel that it would benefit our members.

2. THEN send an email to [email protected]

3. You will be asked by Yahoo to create a log-on name and password and a profile. Please make note of your log-on information. The moderator does NOT have access to your log-on information and you will need it should you change your email address, wish to change options or view the archives. Please be sure to put your name in your profile so we'll know who you are.

4. Once you are approved, you will be able to receive and to post messages to the list, according to the option you've chosen, along with having access to the archives. The options are to receive an individual email as each message is posted, to receive one email daily containing a digest of all postings for that day, or web-only, where you have only online use. Switching to the web-only option temporarily is useful if you will be away from home for an extended period of time.

We don't generally recommend web-only use on a regular basis, although we do permit it at this time. We would really prefer that you be involved in what's going on.

5. You will receive a welcome email that will let you know you're on board. It will include further instructions, as well as instructions for unsubscribing.

6. If you have any questions or problems, you may email the moderator.

Please use good judgment in posting to the list. Don't post information you don't want others to see or use. We have no control over what is done once something's posted, including its being forwarded to other lists. We can delete postings if necessary, but only from the archives, and that will be too late.

Although we allow attachments to be sent to the list, such as text files and photographs, not all members use email providers that enable them to receive them. Remember that people are cautious about opening attachments these days due to virus concerns. When you attach something to a message, please be sure the subject line and the filename reflect what you are attaching and also mention the content of the attached file in the body of the email.

Altho this is primarily a genealogy list, it is also a family list and you may within reason post information or thoughts of your own that you'd like to share with cousins.

Flaming will absolutely not be tolerated. Conflicts and disagreements are bound to arise, but let's please remember that we are family and treat each other with kindness and respect, both on the list and off.

Time and experience have led us to adopt these policies for the Umstead Yahoo Group, which include any policies set by Yahoo Groups.

It's GREAT to be an UM … let's keep it that way.
